While walking down the street after a bizarre week of odd “coincidences” and uncanny timings, I happened to look up and notice the announcement board of a synagogue with this quote by feminist/activist/author Robin Morgan, “Only she who attempts the absurd can achieve the impossible.”
One definition of the word absurd is “inconsistent with reason or logic or common sense,” which means that any decisions or actions deemed as such perhaps come from a place that we can’t always understand, but know is from somewhere deep within us.
Our most popular presidents had a bit of that going on…George Washington’s…
The American way of life is all about productivity and the value we place upon it. This generally means how many hours we spent at the office, how many things we crossed off our to-do lists, projects we completed, goals accomplished.
Another way of being “productive” is by doing nothing. When used in correct proportion and at the right time, nothing can be the most productive thing we can do — that’s the reason why we should give ourselves a snow day at least once a month, regardless of the weather report!
Rest, relaxation and leisurely activities are productive because…
Two decades later, the quest continues to Recognize Our Unity and Celebrate Our Diversity, no matter what form it takes
Sunday was the 20th(?!) year anniversary of the nonprofit organization I founded, The Women’s Mosaic. On Jan. 24, 2001, a diverse group of two dozen women came together to celebrate the Lunar New Year. My goal at the time was to create a forum where women of every background — cultural, ethnic, religious and professional — could gather to learn about and be inspired and empowered by one another. The tagline was Recognizing Our Unity; Celebrating Our Diversity.
There’s a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in. ~ Leonard Cohen
I recently had my apartment painted, which is basically like moving without actually moving. The main reason I did it was to force myself to go through all of my belongings and see what should stay and what should go, clean all the nooks and crannies that never get looked at and rearrange things in a better way. Well, it’s working, but for various reasons has been happening s-l-o-w-l-y….and I just need to be okay with that.
In my post The Present of Presence, I mentioned…
Help bridge the divide in our country by bridging it within yourself
There are so many things wrong right now with our country that have nothing to do with politics.
As an expert on personal growth, healing, and evolution, I see the increasingly toxic political situation as a manifestation of what’s built up over hundreds of years and the result of our own ignorance and refusal to look at hard stuff both individually and collectively or to understand patterns, deal with, be accountable for, process and heal our past; our lack of concern for the well-being of all citizens (not…
For me, and in my observation of so many, the day after the election was a National Day of Mourning. Because although the GOP candidate technically won, our country as a whole lost, not just because of how close it was, but how split apart and divided we are as a result. Amplified by technology and media, we feel this more viscerally than ever.
Unlike many of my friends and others who opposed and then were shell-shocked by the announcement of our new President-elect, I had seen this coming since the summer, slowly and steadily building with a ferocity and…
Wow. Here are all the new words (in date order) I wrote to you over the past 12 months!
It’s far more than the last few years (i.e. 18 entries as opposed to 6 in 2018 and only 2 in 2019!) — which says a lot about how I process things and how I felt called to help people move through these unprecedented and transformative times.
In keeping with the anomaly that was 2020, however, not all of these are straight “PGGs” — meaning they were not the usual stand alone essays you would receive with a title in the…
When the restrictions are external or beyond our control, as many of us experienced in 2020, there are still many positives to be found.
HO, HO … HO? It’s so hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that Christmas was just last week? It has definitely not been the most wonderful time of year for many in 2020 (as it often isn’t, but that’s another story), and my heart goes out to anyone who is suffering from any loss, loneliness, or financial, mental and/or physical health issues.
The amount of change forced upon us these past 10…
Rules are mostly made to be broken and are too often for the lazy to hide behind. ~Douglas MacArthur
There are no rules here — we’re trying to accomplish something. ~ Thomas Alva Edison
One of my all-time favorite films is Strictly Ballroom for a variety of reasons, one of which is how the main character, a world class ballroom dancer wants to use his own steps in competition and the outrage and, ultimately, delight this causes. I’ve always loved to dance but hated formal exercise. …
Make sense of your storyline from the past 12 months and reflect on what script you would like to experience in the year ahead.
I’ve been thinking about the “old days” before Netflix and binge-watching, to the era when the quality of TV began to equal, or surpass in many instances, that of films. Although I personally never watched them, shows like Lost, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Game of Thrones were national obsessions for a minute, as there were fewer home media options and outlets only a decade ago. …
