You might feel that 2024 has been off to a slow start, but it’s about to ramp up, so buckle up buttercup!

Before things really kick into high gear, though, take some time to review where you’ve been these past ~15 years. Yes, that means back to the end of 2008.

It’s a big chunk of time, but I’m betting at least one area of your life has undergone a profound transformation, whether you wanted/liked it or not. My guess is that it was rough going at many points along the way, but now you’re nearly on the other side of it and can see and feel the growth and muscles and perhaps even a whole new life that you’re living.

Whether you judge the changes as good or bad, everything is always for your evolution, pushing you to be a better and more expanded version of yourself. So dig deep, if you must, to find the gratitude in it all.

And now as we come to the end of one road and begin to move through this year of transition, think about not just where you want to go next but, more important, HOW you want to BE in the world, no matter the destination or outer circumstances.

One area of growth for me has been “putting myself out there.” That meant finding and using my voice — both written and spoken — as well as through my image and videos. At the end of 2008 I had been coaching for less than a year. I started doing public talks in 2009, and then on a more regular basis in 2010, which is also when I began publishing these essays (weekly until recently). I barely posted any photos of myself online, not even on my personal Facebook page, until — sparingly — the end of 2013; I started my YouTube channel with very few videos in 2018.

These past 15 years I’ve published over 200 essays and two books, offered dozens of talks to hundreds of people, coached over a thousand clients and posted videos and photos of myself to the general public on a regular basis on Instagram and YouTube (with a recent short at over 1,500 views!) in addition to my personal Facebook page. [Btw, if you don’t already follow or subscribe, please do so and like, share, etc., #allthesocialmediathings]

You might not think any of this is a big deal, but for a formerly shy, still-introverted person who wasn’t always sure of herself and her opinions, or even happy with her looks — and is extremely uncomfortable being the center of attention — it’s been a process of knowing, accepting and valuing myself and owning who I am with a sense of inner security and self-approval. As of today in January 2024, I may not be 100% comfortable in my skin and with what I have to say, but I am much closer to that end of the spectrum than I was in January 2009, when it was maybe 10%.

So think about what your journey has been. How are you a different person than who you were a decade and a half ago? With things speeding up, it gets harder and harder to grasp and truly comprehend and appreciate our life’s journey and trajectory. But as we move into this uncharted territory of technology and massive changes on the world stage, it is important for you to really know who you are, where you’ve been and what you want — and don’t want — next.

As I’ve heard it said, a society is only as good as the people in it, so what part will you play in creating it?
